Janet Harrow Competition

So close but not to be for the ladies this year. They won two rinks out of the three and the score on the third rink wasn't a true reflection of the game. Thirsk are a very strong team containing at least seven Northern County team players so the result was a credit to Bishop Monkton. Very well done, ladies! Captain Sally Scott received the runners-up shield from Yorkshire Ladies' president, Wendy Pickard.

Played in the evening, this game was completed just as the light began to fade. Well done to both teams but Doug McWee and Shaun Slator were the winners - a first for Doug but consecutive wins for Shaun.

After a thrilling game of excellent bowling from both players, Doug McWee beat Mark Summerscales to become gents' champion.

Catherine Jeary

The club was sad to hear of the death of Catherine Jeary. Despite suffering from ill health which she fought with such courage and positivity, she continued to bowl when she felt able and won her first round game in the 'Handicap Singles' competition this year. Our thoughts are with Derek and the rest of her family. The funeral will be held on September 10th at 12 noon at St. John the Baptist in Knaresborough.

Congratulations Ladies

Our ladies have placed first and second in the Harrogate Ladies' League again. It is the second year in a row that this has happened. BM Bridges beat BM Becks by only one point to take the top spot with everything resting on the final game of the season when BM Bridges played Boroughbridge and BM Becks played Harrogate Ebor.

Woods Trophy Competiton

Thirteen ladies (Barbara Bolton also took part but isn't on the photo) competed in the annual Woods Trophy competition this year with Carol Pawson winning; Emma Oates was second and Wyn Headford came third. As a longtime friend of Christine Wood, Wyn was asked to present the trophy.

Ladies v Gents

The weather was kind as it was cooler than of late. 21 players took part (members and family) and the ladies won all four rinks - two rinks of triples, one triples women v two men and a pairs rink. Mark Summerscales presented the shield to Carol Pawson then everyone enjoyed afternoon tea.

Elsdon Metcalfe Finals' Day

In 33 degrees heat, our two pairs played each other in the semi-final with Shaun Slator and Sandra Roberts winning through to the final where they were runners up to a pair from Harrogate.

Thank you to all who turned up to support our players - it meant a lot. Also thanks to Malcolm Hartley for preparing the green and keeping a check on the scores.

Another New Friendly

A team from Selby visited today for the first friendly between the two clubs. On a very hot afternoon, it was decided not to have practice ends but to score one on the first two ends. There were a few spectators and Sue Edmond was busy organising the refreshments.

Elsdon Metcalfe Competition

Two of our pairs who entered this competition (Mark & Pauline and Shaun & Sandra) have won through to the semi-final but, unfortunately, they have to play each other. The other semi-final is between two Harrogate pairs and both games take place at 1pm, Thursday 13th August at Thirsk with the final being played immediately afterwards.

County Janet Harrow Competition

Congratulations to our ladies' Janet Harrow team who beat Harrogate this afternoon to get through to the final against Thirsk on Friday 4th September at York Railway Bowls & Social Club .

New Venture - Aussie Pairs Local Derby

At the last friendly between Burton Leonard and Bishop Monkton, Angie and Malcolm (BL captain) agreed to have a new competition between the two clubs. To be played annually home and away, it will take the format of Aussie Pairs and they would be competing for a trophy provided by Malcolm. The first game was tonight at Bishop Monkton with our team winning.

Do you really know what information is on this website?

It became evident this morning that some members, even though they visit the website regularly (daily in some cases), are not aware of what they can find out by visiting different pages. Want to know our position in the leagues? League tables are updated weekly. Want to know who got through to the next round in an internal competition? It's on the website. Want to know who you are due to play in the next round? It's on the website. Want to know if the friendlies' team won? It's on the website. I could go on. The 'Latest News' page is the only one that is replaced each year - other pages are updated when necessary and some go back several years (the 'Eddie Bowes Trophy' page goes back to 2011, the 'Ladies v Gents' page goes back to 2014). If you haven't already investigated the whole site, why not have a look now.

Yet another Hot Shot!

Having achieved a Hot Shot as part of a team in a recent county game, Su Armstrong and Emma Oates received their certificates at the Bowls Yorkshire Ladies' President's Day.

County Finals

Good luck to our ladies' team of Su Armstrong, Pauline Beecroft, Angie Archbold and Carol Pawson who will play in the final of the 'Over 55 Fours' at Guisborough this weekend. They will be playing against South Cave.

Unfortunately the friendly team against Dishforth today lost but Mark was clearly very happy because he won a pie!

What a game!

The semi-final of the Open Singles was a game worthy of being the final with Tony Burdin and Doug McWee putting on a display of excellent bowling. It was a very close game and a shame only one person could win but Doug did. Well done gents, it was a great game to watch.

North East Police Match

The day started with the singles knockout competition, drawn at random, and unfortunately John was drawn against his Yorkshire team mate. The games were to last for 1hr 15mins or 21 up whichever came first. After the first game, due to the heat, it was agreed that the time would be reduced to 1hr. It was good to see a few supporters and thanks to Angie for providing lunch for the players.

On Tuesday 14th July at 1pm, we are hosting the Yorkshire area final of the national ladies' senior pairs. Participating are Wendy Pickard & Sue Hugill v Jane Simpson & Carol Sarvent. Why not come down to the green to support them and watch some first rate bowling?

North East Police Match

On 16th July (10am), a NE region police sport qualifier will be played on our green. It is a qualifier for the national police championships to be held at Newark on 7th - 10th September. There will be three police forces participating - North Yorkshire (including our own John Archbold), Durham and Northumberland. Three rinks will be in use in the morning and pairs will follow after lunch.

Now tHAT's hot!

Our Dalesman and HLL Bridges teams played in sweltering 30deg heat today and so it was, as far as headgear went, that 'anything goes'. Hats, caps, visors, boaters, sunhats etc were all, very sensibly, in use.

A Busy Green

Our green was very busy this morning with three matches taking place. Carol was playing Sally in the Ladies' Singles, Bill was playing Dave in the Seniors' Singles and Doug and Christine were playing their Elsdon Metcalfe game against a pair from Harrogate.

Gosforth Men's Tour

Gosforth haven't visited for a while and what a pleasure it was to welcome a true group of gentlemen. We had a lovely day enjoyed by all and we came away with a win - what more could you ask for? The game was followed by tea and lots of chat in the Methodist Chapel.

With 25 people seated and 2 take-aways, we exceeded last year's total so a huge success. Thanks must go to Sue, Carol, Barbara and Clare Ellis (a villager who offered her support!) for all their hard work and also to all who attended. Well done everyone.

Wheelbarrow Revamp

The wooden part of the club's wheelbarrow was becoming rather dilapidated but has now got a new lease of life. It should have a good few years of use left in it now.

Bishop Monkton v Bishop Monkton

Our two women's 'Senior Fours' teams travelled to Dunnington for the semi-final playing against each other. On what wasn't a pleasant evening weatherwise, Su Armstrong's team won and now play on county final's day at Guisborough against South Cave who beat Thirsk in the other semi-final. Well done ladies and good luck in the final.

Harrogate Ladies' League

PLEASE NOTE that due to eight of our ladies playing in a county competition, there will be no Harrogate Ladies' League game at Bishop Monkton this week. BM Becks have rearranged their game and it will now be played on Thursday (4th) afternoon.

County Competitions

Why not pop down to the club tomorrow afternoon (1st June) to watch two County Ladies' Triples competitions? At 1pm, Lesley, Sally and Angie will be playing Dunnington and, at 2pm, Pauline, Su and Brenda will be playing North Duffield.

Chairperson's Challenge

After being given instructions by Chair, Carol Pawson, four rinks of Aussie Pairs competed for the Chairperson's Challenge trophy. The pairs had been drawn at random prior to the event although competitors didn't discover who their partner was until the start of the game. Doug McWee and Alan Paskin were the winners.

Hot Shot

During their County Over 55 Fours game against Tockwith today, Brenda, Lesley, Sally and Sandra got a Hot Shot (when all your team's woods count on one end - eight in this case). This means they can apply for a Hot Shot certificate and badge. Both our teams won and are into the semi-final but, unfortunately, they now play each other!

Also this week, Brenda Benson/Lesley Dearlove/Sally Scott/Sandra Roberts travel to Nafferton on Monday for their quarter final clash in the Ladies' Fours. On Thursday, both of our Over 55 Fours' teams play away in the quarter finals with Su Armstrong/Pauline Beecroft/Angie Archbold/Carol Pawson travelling to Thirsk and Brenda/Lesley/Sally/Sandra going to Tockwith.

Keswick

A lovely, warm day, perfect for bowling, welcomed a combined team from Boroughbridge and Bishop Monkton to Keswick for a game in memory of Derek Massingham. It was a very friendly occasion on a lovely green with Keswick just scraping a win. The intention is that this could become an annual event and Keswick hope to travel to Boroughbridge next year.

Bishop Monkton Ladies' Group visit the club

Ten ladies from the Ladies' Group came to the club for a bowling taster session; Florence Bowes, an honorary member of the bowling club, was one of the group's founder members. Despite it being a chilly evening and judging by the laughter, they seemed to be having lots of fun. Thanks must go to Carol, Brenda and Angie for running the session.

Yorkshire Ladies' May Bowl

The May Bowl is a fun afternoon which is open to all ladies who are members of an affiliated club and several ladies from Bishop Monkton took part. Teams were drawn randomly for six ends and then redrawn for each of a further two sets of six. Di came out winner (although wearing her Boroughbridge shirt!) and Sally was second.

Big Bowls Weekend

There will be two open sessions for all ages : Saturday 23rd May, 2 - 4 pm and Monday 25th May, 9.45 - 11.45am (immediately prior to the village Family Fun Day). Refreshments will be served.

Friendly Match in memory of Derek Massingham - 23rd May at Fitz Park Bowling Club, Cumbria.

Our club is joining Boroughbridge BC to play against Fitz Park at Keswick where Derek played prior to moving to Yorkshire. Boroughbridge BC will provide 12 players and we will provide 6 (2 rinks). There is a sign up sheet on the friendly board. Members are requested to nominate themselves by Friday 15th May . Transport will be arranged once the team has been selected.

A sunny afternoon saw 18 bowlers enjoy the first day of the season. A big welcome to everyone especially new and returning members.

We hope to open the green for the season next Sunday 12th April at 2pm - weather permitting. Following your first game, there will be tea/coffee and cake.

The Methodist chapel was full for the coffee morning with bowlers and villagers enjoying a chat with friends. Tea or coffee, with a piece of cake, was available and there were several stalls. Thank you to everyone who came along to support the club.

Almost Ready

We will soon be bowling again and the green was mowed this morning to avoid disturbing the BBC filming as they don't work at the weekends. Robin, Shaun, Steve and Mark are our mowers but more volunteers would be very welcome even if you can only mow once or twice in a season. If you think you may be able to help out, please contact a committee member and a time can be arranged, to suit you, for an explanation of what to do.

Spring Coffee Morning

Don't forget to put the spring coffee morning in your diary - Saturday 28th March from 10am until 12 noon in the Methodist Chapel as the BBC are currently using the village hall. If you have any prizes for the tombola, please drop them off at Angie and John's or Carol's house. There will also be a cake/produce stall so, again, donations would be welcome.

Congratulations to our six lady bowlers who have been selected for county squads. Pauline Beecroft has been selected for the Northern Trophy while Brenda Benson, Sally Scott, Su Armstrong, Emma Oates and Sandra Roberts have been selected for the Stella Logan.

Games Night Update

It was a very busy night with people clearly having lots of fun! Host Billy Miller said, "It was a real community night." The amazing total of £1,149 was raised for club funds. Thank you to everyone who put in lots of time and effort to make the event such a success.

Games Night

Following the success of last year's Games Night, we are holding another on Saturday 21st February at 7pm. Tickets, which are available from Carol or Sue (mobile numbers on poster), are £12 per person which includes games, organised by Billy Miller, and snack style food. The event is ticket only to allow the committee to assess the quantity of food and drink required.

There will be a cash bar which, this year, will also include zero Guinness as requested, in addition to prosecco wine, beer, lager and soft drinks.

Prizegiving/Cheese and wine evening

This was an evening of enjoyment and also celebration of the individual successes in the club's year. All the awards were presented by Carol Pawson (Chair). Dave Chapman received his Senior's award and Angie received an award for taking on the role of friendlies secretary. Congratulations to all the winners.
